Leaked Whitehall analysis reveals
high-earning tenants living in social housing

A total of 6,000 social tenants currently live on more than £100,000 a year according to leaked Whitehall analysis, confirming figures presented by ministers last year.

The data leaked to the Daily Mail also reveals that up to 15,000 households living in council homes currently live on incomes of more than £80,000 a year.

According to the paper, almost a fifth of council households – around 720,000 – earn more than the average national wage.

Housing minister Grant Shapps recently explained the Government would ask high-earning tenants to pay higher rent or face eviction. The “Pay to Stay” measure is expected to save up to £100 million of taxpayers’ money.

In an exclusive column for 24housing, he said: “In the Housing Strategy we’ve announced plans to introduce “Pay to Stay”, so that councils can offer tenants on high incomes such as £100,000 a year, who do not need subsidised rents, two options: either to find alternative accommodation and free up their social home, or pay closer to market rents for their property.”

Most high-earning tenants live in London, where rents are soaring. Frank Dobson, Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, earns £66,000 a year and lives in a council flat.

He told the Mail: ‘Market rents in our area are phenomenal,’ he said. ‘I wouldn’t be able to afford it.’

He added: ‘Very large numbers of people, who in any other part of the country would be regarded as reasonably well off, are not comfortably off in London because of house prices and rents, which are insane.’

Last month, Will Davies, co-founder of maintenance company aspect.co.uk, called council tenants who earn more than £100,000 a year “parasites” and claimed they should be evicted from their homes.

A total of eight million people currently live in four million council (or housing association) homes in England and Wales and there are 1.8 million families on the waiting lists.
