SUGAR EXPERIMENT STATION LIVE PA!
Sugar Experiment Station (SES) is the collaborative effort of Neil Landstrumm and Tobias Schmidt, who have been well known British figures within the European underground since the early 1990s.
Formed around the beginnings of Glasgow’s infamous Test club in 1996, and worked on intermittently to date, the Sugar Experiment Station project has been highly successful, selling thousands of records and taking Landstrumm and Schmidt all over the world in the process – performances including a headline appearance at Sonar 98 and a tour of Japan.
Predominantly releasing on Landstrumm’s Scandinavia imprint, though also featuring on the likes of Neue Heimat, Penalty and on compilations for WaxTrax!, Sonar, I Love Techno and Fuse Club’s ‘1994-2004: Ten Years Techno Music’, Sugar Experiment Station have clearly left their mark on the scene.
While the full length Ultramonotone album sold massively and the few other releases became collectors items (the artists concentrating on their individual work), SES are all about the live performance. Brushing aside much of today’s ‘live’ output, their show has classically been experimental techno hardware improvisation - nasty wasp-like sounds, thick Roland Jupiter 6 sourced riffs, heavy sub bass and ripping techno bleep abstraction.
The April SES live appearance at Substance will showcase their classic material alongside the best of that which is forthcoming within the new release planned this year – a new twist on the SES sound featuring collaborations with the likes of Operator and Danny Diamond.
