We try to treat all our workers fairly.
If there is a week when, due to poor weather, the number of hours worked is reduced we reduce the charges for caravans.
In addition we do not charge for electricity, laundry or bus to supermarket, unlike many other farms who do charge for these items.
In addition we offer our workers free potatoes and carrots when available.
Furthermore we try to assist workers with any health problems - booking appointments & transporting workers to doctors & dentists, providing medication for minor ailments all free of charge.
External inspectors have advised us that our caravans are above average for the industry. If they are damaged or dirty it is because other workers have not looked after them correctly. All caravans have been fully equipped with crockery, cutlery etc in previous years and if there are items missing this is because other occupants have broken or disposed of them. Any requests for replacement items are actioned as soon as possible.
As with every business we expect people to work hard. All workers are paid National Minimum Wage and so it is only fair that targets are set for workers to aim towards and for under-performers not to be offered as much work as people who work hard and meet very achievable targets. Contracts of employment clearly state that workers are not paid for breaks. Any workers who do not agree with hours recorded are advised to notify the office and hours recorded are checked and amended if a mistake has been made.
In June our electricity went off several times, resulting in us being unable to pack fruit and our fridges were not working because workers were using heaters and kettles in the caravans despite being prohibited to do so. Mr Todd asked workers if they had kettles and heaters but no-one admitted they had & so he had to search the caravans and remove items which were disrupting the business operations.
We are very willing to discuss and resolve any problems workers may have at any time.
